Digital assets outran stocks and gold in the third quarter of 2026, ending three consecutive quarters of losses. The CoinDesk 20 rose 52.7% to 2,447, while bitcoin gained 42.7% to $83,554, according to CoinDesk Research’s quarterly review.
The rebound followed a second quarter in which crypto lagged a broader rally in risk assets. In Q3, the S&P 500 rose 2.03%, the Nasdaq gained 0.85% and gold added 3.84%. CoinDesk Research said easing geopolitical pressure, improved liquidity conditions and returning institutional flows shaped the recovery.
Spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded the change in institutional demand. After $4.67 billion in net outflows during the second quarter, funds drew $3.54 billion in August and $2.65 billion in September. August was the highest monthly inflow total since July 2025.

Net flows for the third quarter reached $6.36 billion, an $11 billion swing from the prior quarter. CoinDesk Research described institutions as having waited on the sidelines for macroeconomic catalysts rather than leaving the market. The figures indicate a sharp reversal in flows, though the report ties market performance to several forces.
The review cited easing, but still elevated, Middle East tensions and the U.S. Treasury’s August expansion of longer-dated bond buybacks. The buybacks revived what some market participants called the “debasement trade” narrative, described in the report as a form of “mini quantitative easing.” Regulatory clarity and growth in tokenized equities also added to sentiment, according to the research.
Performance extended beyond bitcoin. The CoinDesk 100 rose 53.3% to 1,890, the CoinDesk Memecoin Index gained 45.9% to 324, and the CoinDesk 5 rose 46.7% to 1,406. The CoinDesk 80 led the multi-asset indexes, climbing 57.4% to 559 and outperforming bitcoin by roughly 14.7 percentage points.
All 20 constituents of the CoinDesk 20 finished the quarter higher. Uniswap led with a 220% gain, followed by NEAR at 200%. Chainlink rose 100%, and Aave gained 87.5%. Cardano advanced 71.0%, Ether 70.9%, Sui 68.8%, Avalanche 67.5% and Solana 60.5%. CoinDesk Research noted that the strongest performers separated materially from the weakest returns.
The breadth of gains offers context for investors comparing performance across digital assets. A separate layer-2 token rally also covered a sector-specific move, while another report followed digital-asset market data. For a broader adviser perspective, Wealth Tech Daily has also examined proactive client planning.
CoinDesk Research said Treasury buybacks partially offset spikes in longer-term yields, improving liquidity conditions for assets such as bitcoin. The report also pointed to renewed ETF inflows and accumulation by digital asset treasury companies as signs of net demand.
Strategy resumed net buying after earlier concerns about its sale of ~7,000 BTC, and its holdings moved above pre-sale levels by late September, the report said. It characterized bitcoin’s 42.7% quarterly gain after three losing quarters as a possible transition from a post-peak correction toward accumulation in the four-year cycle ahead of the 2028 halving.
The review identified expanding on-chain trading volume in real-world assets as a potential catalyst for convergence with traditional finance. It also said stronger performance by several CoinDesk 20 and CoinDesk 80 assets than bitcoin showed the importance of broader exposure and asset-specific catalysts. Market conditions and institutional flows remain central to the report’s outlook for the next quarter.
